2 Skinnee J's Debut CD will throw you to the dance floor by Kevin Cain, Journal Now The play button on the CD player converts the room into a dance floor. Supermercado!'s beats and infectious lyrics make it hard to sit still, even to listeners who do not necessarily like rap or alternative music. 2 Skinnee J's, seven talented musicians from New York, accomplish a successful mix of amusing lyrics and awesome background music with their mainstream debut. The first song, "Pluto," introduces the powerful combination of vocals from Special J and J. Guevara, the lyricists in the band. "The Best" seizes attention with educated lyrics that alternate between Special and Guevara. The hometown anthem of the J's, "718," is an excellent dance song because of its simple lyrics and immediate tempo changes. "The Good, The Bad, and The Skinnee" is a great song with spaghetti-western influenced guitar and lyrics. "Riot Nrrrd," the first single off the album, is an impressive mix of synthesizers, reggae keyboard and grunge guitar. These sounds mesh together perfectly to make a superb-sounding song. The album as a whole is a creative, upbeat mix of dance songs. The J's mix a number of sounds to produce this refreshing alternative to today's rock. I'd rather be up dancing to the songs than sitting and writing about the album, so Supermercado! is definitely worth the money and time. |
