CD gets hip-hop hooray by Matt Falconer, Northeastern News "Supermercado," the debut release on Capricorn Records from the Brooklyn-based band 2 Skinnee J's, is an energetic fusion of rap, rock and hip-hop that'll make you want to put your hands in the air and wave them like you just don't care. Somebody scream! The 12-track, 43-minute musical melange blends intelligent and entertaining rap with hip hop, traditional bass/drum/guitar rock and some spaced-out keyboard sounds. With beats that bump and lyrics that pump, the songs on "Supermercado" range from totally hyper to deep, slow grooves. Almost all of them will make your booty move. "Pluto," the first track, is about discrimination and is cleverly constructed around the theme of Pluto being smaller than all the other planets. "Cause small minds can't see past Uranus ... and I can see clearly now like Hubble / Shoved off the shuttle, here's my rebuttal." "The Best" is 2 Skinnee J's self-indulgent ditty about how they are "all that and a bag of chips." The best line from the next track, "In the clutches of the diabolical Sgt. Stiletto," has got to be "I eat a fool like Ozzy eats a bat." "The Whammy" is a fast-paced, frantic, hyperactive tune that jumps up and down and around. "You're a Champion" - with its thumping bass beat - has another great one-liner: "I love to rhyme like Michael loves children." "The Good, the Bad and the Skinnee" blends some heavy guitar, a hip-hop beat, and the lyrical acrobatics of J and Guevara into a manifesto of musical power. "Riot Nrrrd" is the first single off the album. The song is a good example of the musical boundaries the band crosses by combining different contemporary styles. "Mindtrick" is 2 Skinnee J's attempt to use the force, like Obi Wan Kenobi from "Star Wars," to pave their way to world domination and vanquishing of their enemies. In all, "Supermercado" is a witty, entertaining, clever mixture of rap, hip-hop, and rock that pleases the ear and stimulates the mind. As Special J would say, "I'm more novel than 'War and Peace.'" |
